still feels infinitely empty
between these walls;
it is too much and too little,
between those of a galaxy
that my hands cannot graze
there is an infinity, though
that i can grasp, hidden
behind irises and in the
shadows of this aftermath
bittersweet "I want a latte. Iced. Extra cream; whole milk," she says, clipped. She would say these words so much, those "extra-cream-latte'd"–filled mornings have become a sound with no meaning.
Everyday brought the same tedious routine. Coffeehouse: the rattle among the java cups, the incessant chatter of the workers in the back, the scrambling, the rush of things. Brought her back a cup half-full (or was it half empty?) never served perfectly, with too much milk or vice versa; the exchange of a couple dollars. inhale: such a bitter feeling fills her. Ahhhhh—
This time her face twisted with uncertainty. "But, but this is too sweet. I never asked for extra sugar!" she shook her cup wildly with a growing annoyance, the jangling of ice heard throughout the cafe. then, silence.
